Water and waste management workers
Why vaccination matters for water and waste management workers
Here are some of the main reasons it’s important to keep up to date with your vaccines for plumbers, wastewater workers, garbage truck drivers, and those who maintain garbage trucks
Exposure to Sewage and Contaminated Water
- Direct contact with human waste that may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites
- Exposure to pathogens such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and gastrointestinal infections
Contact with Household, Commercial, and Medical Waste
- Handling waste that may contain contaminated materials, sharps, or biological hazards
- Exposure to items soiled with bodily fluids (e.g., tissues, hygiene products)
- Risk of needle-stick injuries from improperly disposed sharps
- Increased exposure during waste sorting, compaction, or maintenance work
Close Proximity to Waste Collection Equipment
- Frequent contact with bins, compactors, truck surfaces, and leachate (waste liquid)
- Surfaces may harbour bacteria and viruses for extended periods
- Maintenance staff exposed to internal components contaminated with waste residue
- Splash-back or spray during loading and cleaning operations
Aerosols, Dust, and Bioaerosols
- Disturbing waste can release airborne particles containing microorganisms
- Inhalation risk during collection, transfer, or processing activities
- Increased exposure in enclosed spaces such as truck cabins, depots, or treatment facilities
- Odour-control systems do not eliminate infectious agents
Cuts, Injuries, and Skin Contact Risks
- Physical work increases likelihood of cuts, punctures, and abrasions
- Open skin provides an entry point for infection
- Heavy manual tasks increase the chance of accidental exposure
Protecting Families and Communities
- Reduces the chance of bringing infections home after work
- Helps prevent wider community transmission
- Supports overall public health resilience
Workplace Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Supports compliance with occupational health guidelines
- Demonstrates commitment to worker safety and wellbeing
- Complements other controls such as PPE and hygiene practices
Personal Health Protection
- Lowers the risk of severe disease from occupational exposure
- Helps workers stay healthy and able to perform physically demanding tasks
- Reduces time off work due to illness
- Supports long-term wellbeing in high-risk roles
Vaccinations to consider:
Influenza
COVID-19
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Tetanus
Japanese Encephalitis (location dependent)
Q Fever (if disposing of livestock)
Workplace risks vary. Protection should too.
Find out which vaccinations are right for your staff.
- Request a quote, and we’ll collaborate with you to identify industry-specific vaccination needs.
- We then organise onsite clinics at your workplace for your staff, where they can schedule appointments with our skilled nurse immunisers.
- During the initial appointment, our Immunisation Nurse will review each employee’s Medicare Immunisation History Statement and any additional vaccination records to assess their vaccination status. If necessary, vaccinations are administered, and all records are securely stored in our clinical software. Additionally, vaccination records are uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), ensuring employees have a reliable ongoing record.
- For vaccines requiring multiple doses, we coordinate return visits as needed and are available for new staff requiring vaccinations as they commence their roles.
We understand the health and safety of your employees are of paramount importance, and we are committed to working closely with you to ensure a successful occupational workplace vaccination program
